German yacht builder Lürssen has earned a leading international reputation as the specialist for exclusive, bespoke yachts of outstanding engineering mastery. The development of sustainable technologies and innovations in yacht building are firmly anchored in Lürssen's DNA.
The privately owned company, based in Northern Germany, was founded in 1875 and remains solely in the hands of the fourth generation of the Lürssen family. With a workforce of 1800, Lürssen also offers extensive after-sales services, including repairs, refits, maintenance and worldwide logistics services, in addition to its new-build business.
As part of PaXell2, a land-based demonstrator was developed and built at the Lürssen shipyard in which the newly developed fuel cell from the partner Freudenberg can be operated and tested. The demonstrator contains all the relevant components and systems of a ship in order to be able to represent real operation on a yacht. Some of the main components are the tank and bunker system, the ventilation system, the main control panel including converter, the power management and monitoring system and of course the fuel cell itself. The demonstrator allows all systems to be tested as on a real yacht. For example, any load profiles can be simulated and the interaction of the systems can be tested. The fuel cell was installed in the demonstrator in June 2020 and commissioning began in July.
